About Us

Thompson Academy's mission is to provide high quality childcare and early childhood education in a warm, nurturing and stimulating, hands-on learning environment.
Our Philosophy
It is our professional goal to set an example of what excellence in childcare and early childhood education really means. We feel a balance of Teacher-Directed and Child-Initiated activities woven into your child’s daily routine is the best approach to building the foundation a child needs to develop a love of learning. We are committed to allow for individual learning styles and encourage our children to become who they are.
Teacher-Directed
This method of learning helps children who may be visual learners, who learn best from a tangible example of something they are attempting to accomplish. Seeing an example allows children to infer things, understand concepts, construct complex objects, imagine, reason, design, create and search for answers to the unknown. For this reason, fundamental concepts will be introduced to the child during Circle Time and other group activities such as Art. All learning activities are designed to be fun, inviting, and short in duration, as a child’s attention span can be limited. We encourage children to express themselves through all sorts of hands-on activities with many different media. Our intention is to pique a child’s interest in learning so they may benefit from the joy that it brings.
Child-Initiated
An important objective at Thompson Academy is to provide a rich and supportive atmosphere in which children gain self-confidence. A fundamental step in the process is the freedom to develop independent thinking and to make decisions based on one’s needs or wants. In a relaxed, accepting atmosphere, children can feel safe to take the lead in choosing their activities and make their own discoveries. A large portion of the day is dedicated to child-initiated activities. Research indicates the development of thoughts and ideas and practice with expressing oneself is directly linked to the development of high self-esteem.

Themes and Portfolios
Individual, age appropriate themes will be explored in every classroom. These may last from two to four weeks. Special Activities and Centers will be planned around the theme as well. Children will have the freedom to suggest other activities related to a particular theme and every child will have an opportunity to express his/her own ideas and will be encouraged to do so. The learning atmosphere we strive for is imaginative and encourages the curiosity of young minds, listens to thoughts and ideas with respect, and answers questions with the intent to expand a child’s universe.
Each classroom has their art work displayed throughout the room. We also share photos on Brightwheel of their artwork and daily activities. At the end of the school year a portfolio will be presented to you as a memory of all that your child has accomplished and created throughout their time with their teacher at Thompson Academy.
